From School Library Journal:

Grade 9 Up. Feinberg uses topical chapters to trace the creation, history, and evolution of the American vice presidency. This approach allows her to examine changes in various aspects of the office, ranging from selection to the surprising number of scandals in which vice presidents have been involved to the often-tense relationships between the two executives and the increased importance of the job in the second half of this century. The author also describes the actions of the second in command during periods of presidential disability and their assumption of duties after the death of a president, concluding with proposals to reform the office. The book is well researched, accurate, and thorough. However, it is often dry and most students will need at least some background to understand both the personalities and the ambitions of office holders and the political and historical implications of the events they have influenced. Black-and-white photos and reproductions add little to the text. Diana Healy's America's Vice Presidents (Atheneum, 1984; o.p.) covers much of the same material in separate biographical sketches of the vice presidents through George Bush. Edmund Lindop's Presidents by Accident (Watts, 1991) provides chapter-long overviews of the administrations of the nine vice presidents who have assumed the presidency after the deaths of a commander in chief. This book will not draw a large general audience, but it will be useful for reports, and should be considered as an additional purchase for libraries that need materials on either this office or constitutional history.?Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
