Gr. 7^-12. In a revised edition of her original 1985 title, Pascoe combines a history of racism in this country with a discussion of contemporary issues. After a general overview, she devotes a chapter each to African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and American Indians. In each case, she uses special type to quote the racist stereotypes, and then she subverts them with historical and contemporary facts. The generic nature of the stereotypes makes this a stimulating book for discussion: what group hasn't been labeled at some time as "lazy, irresponsible, filthy, ignorant, etc." ? Because the sweep is so broad, there is very little room for detail, especially since each ethnic group includes people with many different histories and backgrounds; but the chapter notes discuss the best sources for those who want to read more. There is also a long bibliography and an annotated list of organizations to contact. Hazel Rochman
