Grade 7-9 The history of ancient Rome is described in detailed two-page chapters. The emphasis is on politics, but topics such as religion, education, and cooking are also covered. Quotations from noted classical historians, such as Livy, Seutonius, and Pliny, abound and are often the focus of the chapter. The book is visually attractive, with clear color photographs and drawings of pertinent historical scenes, sites, and antiquities. Despite the author's obvious enthusiasm for his subject, however, the text is not particularly readable. The inclusion of too many detailed facts results in an often awkward, jumpy writing style. While the book is not successful in presenting a clear overview of Roman life and civilization, it could be useful as supplementary material on specific subjects. Marguerite F.
