Review:
A fun exploration of the library with the wolf close on her tail. * Reach newsletter, 1999 * With real mini books slotted into the pages, this is a fun romp through the world of nursery rhymes. Humor is as plentiful as Bo Peep's sheep and kids will love searching out the woolly critters in the illustrations. * Washington Parent, April 2000 * Complete with three witty pull-out books, this clever selection not only entertains but sends a strong message about reading and finding just what you want at your local library. This story not only is adorable but has got the added bonus of three pullout books inside its pages. Kids will giggle their way through this adventure, and they may even learn something about how to use a library. * Leslie Kimmelman * is lots of laughs for preschool to second grade and even older kids.... This is just the right book for parent-child reading time. * Cabarrus Neighbors * There's far more going on in this book than can be caught in a first or even second read. Nursery rhyme in-jokes abound, both in the text and the informal, almost slapdash illustrations. But though the tone is generally irreverent, the thoughtful, intrigued and jubilant faces of the library patrons reflect a very appropriate attitude towards books. * Notes from the Windmill * Great fun from Cressida Cowell * School Librarian * Kids will love the clever gags while absorbing an important message about books and learning. * Child (Feb 2000) * There isn't a child out there who won't love Bo Peep's Troublesome Sheep. It's funny, charming, and a worthy addition to any bookshelf * The Bookbag * Ingenious, colourful and well-constructed, this is a hugely tempting and entertaining book for young readers, with a knowing twist of humour for the supporting adult * Carousel * Small children will treasure it and older childen will want to invent a literary voyage of their own * Junior Education * A wonderfully inventive story * The Independent * This novelty book is bursting with puns and jokes that will keep older children entertained as well as those who are learning nersery rhymes * The Good Book Guide * With loads to look at and enjoy, this brilliant book is destined to be a great hit with everyone (and especially librarians) * Kids Out * Witty and entertaining with an all-important message: keep reading! * The Independent * Clever, witty, stuffed with visual and verbal references to the world of nursery rhymes and stories * Guardian Education * An outstanding book * Books for Keeps * The wacky humour means older children and even adults will enjoy the books long after they have outgrown nursery rhymes * The Bookseller * This book is so witty and accomplished that it's hard to believe it's her first * The Herald, Glasgow * Cowell borrows unashamedly from other writers, transforming their ideas into something her own through the twist of her wit and the brilliance of her illustration * TES Primary *
From Publishers Weekly:
This droll book deftly combines a cast of nursery rhyme characters with an actual lending library (three booklets are housed within its pages). Having lost her sheep, Little Bo Peep goes to the local library to research how to find them. Librarian Mother Goose erroneously directs her to the cooking section, where the Big Bad Wolf is salivating over a copy of Basic Little Girl Cookery. Readers can pull their own copy of the wolf's cookbook from a library shelf; the eight-page, index-card-size collection describes such treats as "Riding Hood Sandwich" and "Muffet and Blackbird Pie." After perusing the library's crime section, Little Bo Peep finds just the title she needs among the natural history books, next to British Dragons and Their Eggs by Saint George. Not only do the sheep come home wagging their tails behind them, but readers can see that they have been trailing the shepherdess for the entire book; the sheep even save her from the wolf (who, brandishing a knife and fork, stalks her through several spreads). Cowell's winning watercolors sparkle with wit, down to the last detail: the Three Bears roam the stacks, poring over porridge recipes; the cooking section boasts such volumes as the Queen of Heart's Tarts and Cooking with Fat by Mrs. A. Sprat. The book and its inserts all sport an authentic-looking bar code and sign-out card. Kids will want to keep this one in their own personal libraries. Ages 4-7. (Sept.)
