PLB 0-531-33256-X Just for fun, a bouncing, beginning body book for the picture book set. Exuberant full-color photographs of boys and girls of various sizes, ages, and races celebrate the human body: ``We all have bodies with many different parts. We have eyes to see, a nose to smell, ears to hear and mouth to talk. . . . Young children will enjoy the vividly colored photographs of smiling children running, playing soccer, eating pizza, sharing secrets, hugging, playing baseball, and more. Photographs are cropped and placed in a variety of ways to show action sequences and details, to push perspective, and to challenge the viewer to see more than a flat photograph on a page. Rotner (Close, Closer, Closest, 1997, etc.) has collaborated on other projects with Calcagnino, an exhibition designer for the Boston Children's Museum. This is the first title he has co-authored. An appealing concept book. (Picture Book. 3-8)-- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K-With minimal text and a variety of crisp, bright photographs, this simple concept book presents parts of the body, from eyes, ears, and nose to toes. The authors name a part and then its function, e.g., "tongues to taste- arms to hug and hold." There is an awkward departure at the end of the book when "Fingers, toes, and one belly button" are just listed, without any description of their use. The layout is made interesting by photographs cut to different sizes with varying degrees of white space left on each page. Pictures include boys and girls from diverse ethnic backgrounds, but no physically challenged children are depicted. While this book provides youngsters with a basic introduction, it is not particularly creative or original.
