Ana Marie Pamintuan's novel, although a fictional story that takes place in the Philippines just after the surrender of Spanish forces to the Americans (circa 1901), manages to be historically relevent to the events and cultures of the times. Ms. Pamintuan brilliantly tells a fictional love story between a young daughter of a wealthy Filipino Mestiza father and a Chinese Filipina mother, and manages to bring out many of the country's social, political and religious challenges--then and now--as well as the beauty of the Philippines and its peoples' culture, much of which are still evident today. In my opinion, it is brilliantly done. The novel manages to criticze--through entertaining storytelling--the shortcomings of American, Spanish and Philippine officials and their policies--as well as some of the Catholic clergy--who were not acting in the best intersts of the people. The author presents an intellectually honest, well woven story--in a fictional context--that the reader can relate to both historical and modern day politicians and clergy of the country. I hope she writes more novels! Thoroughly enjoyed her classic work!
