Who was General Andrey Andreyevich Vlasov? Was he an enemy of Stalins repressive Soviet regime? Or is the truth about Vlasov what is generally referred to as the common version: that he gave himself up as a prisoner and a coward, and under German pressure agreed to head an anti-Stalin movement? For this he was put to death by Stalin in 1946. Summoning the Spirit of General Vlasov, by Gavriil Popov, is a well-researched and thought-provoking examination of the General and all the major players of that era who were against state-bureaucratic socialism. These include opponents of Lenin; enemies of Stalin; and much more. This long overdue book, with its many twists and turns, sheds much light on this elusive figure in Russian history. In some ways, writes the author, he (General Vlasov) was a hero of Moscow defense. Readers will have plenty to ponder with this well-written analysis of General Andrey Andreyevich Vlasov.
