Young Benjamin, the son of a "super shepherd," lives just a couple of hills outside of Bethlehem. Ben is learning to be like his father, but because of his youth and schoolwork, he doesn't get to go out in the fields all that much. Some day, Ben may become a doctor, merchant, scribe, or a priest, but what he really wants to be is a "good shepherd" like his father. Some day, Ben may become a doctor, merchant, scribe or a priest, but what he really wants to be is a "good shepherd" like his father. In Rev. Capitola Littlefield Gwillim's charming story, we find Ben out in the field one night talking with other shepherds about "the rotten political conditions in Jerusalem," a hypocrite leader named "King Herod" who may have murdered his family, and other hot topics of the day. Suddenly, an angel appears, creating enormous light up and down the hills and fields! "We thought it was Judgment Day," says Ben. Still, it does turn out to be a very bright night! Whether Ben ever became a shepherd like his father is unknown. But Ben, as readers learn from the author's charming story told in verse, experiences the profound joy of being among the first to see what God has sent to us all.
