Ernesto Fagnilli was born and raised in the community of Oakland, located in the city of Pittsburgh during the time frame this story took place. The author's father was an immigrant from Italy. He worked in the steel mills and fell victim to The Death Ingot. This story is Ernesto theory as to why so many steelworkers died from this dreaded disease that led ultimately to the demise of the steel industry in Pittsburgh and to its rebirth as a medical and university metropolis, which it remains to this day. Ernesto was a contractor during the renaissance of the city. He experienced firsthand many of the events told in this book.
