In this evocative novel, a young girl in 1890s Oregon dreams of city life and the promises of the new century—but her fate is in the hands of others.
At the age of fifteen, Effie is forced into marriage with a much older man, a prosperous wheat rancher. After three years of making the best of her new life, tending her two babies and learning to live with a man she doesn’t love, disaster strikes. A storm decimates their wheat crop and the bank soon forecloses on their ranch.
Hoping for a fresh start, Effie and her family board a wagon train for Idaho and the promise of a homestead, but when they find the acreage taken, they face poverty yet again. Many hardscrabble years follow. As they move from one mining camp to another and their family grows, Effie’s husband becomes abusive. Her vision of a beautiful future vanishes from her heart—but through it all, Effie knows that she must endure and keep her family together.
Finally, the family finds a measure of peace and stability in a small Idaho town—but just when their world seems to be settling down, the unthinkable happens: Effie meets the love of her life. Must she choose between her own happiness and the fate of her children? Effie knows that it will take all of her strength to do the right thing.
Rich with historic detail and heart-wrenching drama, Effie will keep you turning the pages late into the night.
