Who was Adolf Hitler, and how was he able to rise to such dizzying heights of power? How could Germany, a nation with such a brilliant record of achievement in all areas of human endeavor, succumb to (and even support) Hitler's murderous rule? To answer these questions, Donald Wall draws on over 30 years of personal scholarship and teaching in the area of Nazi Germany. Balanced, articulate, and accessible to readers of all levels, NAZI GERMANY AND WORLD WAR II offers a comprehensive treatment of the key events and themes without getting bogged down in trivial detail. The text includes solid supporting evidence and recent research on such hotly debated topics as German citizens'knowledge of the Holocaust and popular support for the Gestapo's reign of terror.

About the Author:
Before receiving his doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1969, Wall spent a year in Germany researching his dissertation, and taught for three years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He joined the faculty of Metropolitan State College of Denver in 1969. Wall has taught Western Civilization and various upper level courses in European history, but his "bread and butter" course, which happens to coincide with his research specialty, has been Nazi Germany. He inaugurated the course in 1972 and has offered it every semester since then. It remains the history department's most popular upper level course. Professional activities include four published articles (all on the churches under the Nazi regime), several book reviews and conference papers, grants for research and travel in Germany, membership in four professional organizations, and three sabbatical leaves.
Review:
"Donald Wall asks the right questions about Nazi Germany and World War II. His four themes are: Who was Adolf Hitler and how did he rise to power?; Why did the German people enthusiastically support him?; Why was WWII, "Hitler's War," so destructive?; How could the Holocaust have happened? His text is organized around these four themes and he does an outstanding job of explicating them. His text is easily comprehensible and interesting. I find his vision for the book to be clear and consistent as well as compelling."

"Wall's book serves as an excellent introductory text to the period and his explanation of the rise of Hitler, the establishment of the dictatorship and the event of the war is nuanced and reflects the best of the current historical literature."
