Reviews

PreS-Gr 1—In this British import, Lindsay creates nonsensical rhyming sentences, phrases, and words from the simple word socks. The author attempts to suggest humor and creativity in wordmaking by example. However, the made-up language continues ad nauseam, spinning from "Sockywockydoodah" to "Goldisocks" to playing a "socksophone" for a "sockodile." Meanwhile, Sharratt decorates the pages with simple pen-and-ink doodles of a boy and a girl cavorting around the digitally-colored stockings. Patterns on the socks are colorful and varied, but the text grows tedious and ludicrous despite the lighthearted drawings. This book is similar to but not as amusing as Sharratt's illustrations in Giles Andreae's Pants or More Pants. VERDICT Despite the clever theme and attractive artwork, this book's inane text suggests a pass.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
