From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up Fifteen-year-old Dinah Adler is startled and confused by her family's reaction when she is asked out for her first dateand by the most popular boy in the class. They're not upset that she's dating, but that she's dating a gentile. She just wants to go bowling; they're worried about intermarriage and the assimilation of Jewish people. Life is further complicated by preparations for brother Jonathan's bar mitzvah; by clingy Erna, who has no other friends; and by classmates Phil and Claudia's attempts to keep their relationship a secret. Dinah's mother, too, has to keep a gentile friend at arm's length or risk a similar outcome; Dinah's grandmother works with problem kids, yet finds communication with a beloved granddaughter suddenly impossible. Phil and Claudia resort to subterfuge, then running away to deal with their problems, but Dinah and Geoff know this is not answer for them. Full of the emotional highs and lows and inter-generational misunderstandings so common with this age group, the novel also provides some interesting insights into Jewish family customs and concerns. While the multitude of problems and the easily predictable ending are flaws, this teen romance is a superior alternative to those series romances that are constantly requested. From Publishers Weekly:

Cohen (Roses, Lover's Games, etc.) pulls no punches in this tale about a Jewish girl whose family doesn't want her to date a gentile boy. She raises some very valid points about people who are "liberal" only when an issue doesn't touch them personally. Dinah Adler, who's never been asked out by a boy, is thrilled when handsome football star Geoff Ruggles shows interest in her; but Dinah's widowed mother and grandparents don't want her to see Geoff, because he's not Jewish. Dinah wants to invite Geoff to her brother's bar mitzvah, but her family won't hear of it, even though her two gentile girlfriends will be there. Dinah and Geoff break up but reunite when they search for friends Phil and Claudia, who have run away together. Dinah forces her family to see that there's a parallel between herself and Claudia, whose parents try to prevent her from seeing "unsuitable" Phil. An interesting, compelling treatment of a thorny problem: the desire to protect one's religion from intermarriage vs. the perception that this is narrow-minded and prejudiceda problem for which Cohen rightfully provides no easy answers. Ages 10-up.
