PreSchool-Grade 1-This slight, easy-to-read counting tale follows two crows, from sunrise to sundown, as they count up to 10 and down again. Their day begins with "1 ONE sun rising," and ends with "1 ONE sun glowing." There is much repetition, the type is large, and phrases are kept simple with the needs of pre-readers in mind. Each scene is observed twice: as they fly, the crows observe "9 NINE farmers haying/10 TEN children playing." Then, as they return home, they see "10 TEN children snoozing/9 NINE farmers snoring." The appealing, textured cut-paper illustrations add depth and vibrancy to the pastoral scenes. Moffatt also uses darker silhouettes to depict objects seen against the rising or setting sun. An attractive addition.?Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
