Mystery Cat, who belongs to both Kelly Ann McCoy and Hillary Barnett, leads his two owners into a search for mysterious counterfeiters

Grade 3-5 Light reading that is slightly reminiscent of Mary Anderson's F*T*C Superstar (Atheneum, 1976; o.p.) or Mildred Gordon's Undercover Cat (Doubleday, 1973; o.p.). Mystery Cat lands Hillary and Kelly Ann smack in the middle of one of the greatest adventures of their lives when he finds some counterfeit bills and the two girls decide to follow him back to the source. Using somewhat more logic than is generally found in children's mysteries, Hillary tracks down the culprits only to walk into a trap from which Kelly Ann and M. C. must free her. Simple line drawings highlight some of the action but do not add much to the story. By no means a necessary purchase, this could be a purr-fect choice for paperback racks where cat stories and mysteries are popular. The ending hints at the possibility of a sequel.
