Grade 6-8 In this slice of fluff and fun, seventh-grade best friends Scotti Wheeler and Lorna Markham make elaborate plans to help each other get the boyfriends they want. Scotti has a ``mega-crush'' on Lorna's older brother, Skip, and Lorna is fond of Fletcher Holloway, who secretly adores Scotti. Motivated by her unrequited love for Skip, Scotti dresses up in sophisticated black and memorizes 100 jokes to impress him, while Lorna joins the YMCA basketball team to be near Fletcher. In the end Scotti realizes that Skip is too mature for her, and Lorna sees Fletcher as something of a klutz. Middle school girls will read on to find out if either girl gets her guy, and they won't know until the very end. The third-person point of view shifts confusingly between Scotti and Lorna, and Haynes sacrifices interesting character development for action. However, her lively dialogue and breezy style capture the energy, excitement, and craziness of first love. Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, Tex.

Scotti and Lorna, next-door neighbors and best friends from The Great Mom Swap, are back, and they both have the same goal: to have a boyfriend. Each of them also has a sincere interest in helping the other one get her guy. Scotti likes Lorna's older brother Skip (Lorna thinks he's a jerk). Lorna likes Fletcher, who has a crush on Scotti (she thinks he's a nerd). The friendship wavers several times as plans for boy-trapping flounder, but by the end the girls are writing to Lorna's Hawaiian pen pal, in search of more hopeful prospects. Haynes has fun showing the lengths best friends will go for one another; her breezy style carries off this pre-romance with just the right mix of seriousness and humor. Ages 7-11.
