Mr. Rose brings his science class a cooler full of worms so that they can study the animals' characteristics first hand.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-4 On Pet Day, Mr. Rose helps his class of ten typically loud, curious students create a desert. The kids prepare a special box with dirt and sand, learn how to hold the animals Mr. Rose has brought in, briefly discuss eggs and babies, and cope with a lost mouse. On Trip Day, the class is off to a pond to collect water and mud samples for microscopic investigation back in class, observing, drawing what they see, and setting up experiments. On Worm Day, Mr. Rose shows up with a cooler full of worms. The class observes, performs various experiments, and reaches a few worm conclusions. Throughout, Mr. Rose is a veritable paragon of good teaching practices, but who cares? He is such a one-dimensional figure and the rest of the class such stock figures that few kids will be interested enough to plow through. There's lots of dialogue, and more text than the usual beginning-to-read, which seem to aim the series at a bridge book audience, but the form tends to be monotonous (despite the use of a record number of exclamation points!) short-sentence declaratives. The awkward black-line cartoon drawings, shaded in grays, do nothing to loosen up or personalize this crowd. Their simple lines, whose dot eyes turn to caricature slants in the Asian child, don't even always accurately represent the text. For a teacher and classroom exploring science in a lively, clever fashion, go with Cole's ``Magic School Bus'' titles (Scholastic). Nancy Palmer, The Little School, Bellevue, Wash.
