From Library Journal:

Taylor, a retired government official and author of two other successful biographies, offers a study of his famous father that is no mere exercise in filial piety. The younger Taylor brings sound critical sensitivity to bear in depicting a man who successfully embodied the qualities his country has traditionally demanded of its professional soldiers. Maxwell Taylor rose to fame as a paratrooper during World War II. Later he was superintendent of West Point, commander of the 8th Army in Korea, and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Taylor was a man able to view a situation from all angles, then reach and implement a decision unhampered by second thoughts. This mind-set made him a valuable part of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Its limits became plain during the Vietnam War, when Taylor's advocacy of staying the course took too little account of changing realities. Recommended.-- Dennis E. Showalter, Colorado Coll., Colorado Springs correction: Diane Tong's Gypsy Folktales, reviewed in LJ 4/15/89, costs $19.95, not $21.95, as the review stated.

From Publishers Weekly:

Maxwell Taylor, the U.S. general who wanted to "stick it out" in Vietnam at almost any price, emerges, inadvertently perhaps, in his son's dry, plodding biography as a man who didn't learn from experience. The military stalemate in Korea, over which the general presided, was to him "confirmation that the U.S. could confront Communist aggression virtually anywhere in the world and bring about at least an acceptable conclusion." Years after he played a key role in the Cuban missile crisis, Taylor romanticized the event, denying that there was any chance it could have led to a world war. As U.S. ambassador to Vietnam under Johnson, he invoked Eisenhower's "domino theory," warning of the loss of all Southeast Asia. The author also credits his father with pioneering the military strategy of "flexible response." The early chapters dealing with Taylor's heroism in WW II will especially interest military buffs.
