Reviews

There are certain attitudes and behaviors, or "relapse traps," that predispose a recovering alcoholic or addict to return to former addictions, according to Rogers and McMillin, authors of Freeing Someone You Love from Alcohol and Drugs (Price Stern Sloan, 1989). Twelve such "pitfalls," including those of complacency, stress, and mental illness, for example, are presented here, along with case histories of persons in recovery who have fallen into relapse despite successful periods of abstinence. Exercises that encourage thought monitoring and behavior modification, such as journal keeping, using creative imagery, and working on a 12-step program are suggested to help avoid or correct potentially destructive behavior. This thoughtfully written and accessible book will be valuable to those in recovery or those working with addicts and their families. Recommended for psychology collections.
