The delights, indignities and adjustments of reaching the half-century mark are observed by journalist Greene. He reads his entertaining, pithy look at aging in an upbeat style, which clearly demonstrates that he's enjoying himself. The listener will, too, as the narrative proceeds in a stream-of-consciousness style through just about all the issues that come up as we age. Greene's enthusiasm for his material helps capture the listener's interest, even if aging is not yet an issue. The author's natural vocal style enhances his material, which is consistently entertaining. M.A.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, MaineFrom Library Journal:
Greene, a veteran journalist and chronicler of the baby boom generation (e.g., All Summer Long, Audio Reviews, LJ 6/15/93), collects his thoughts on turning 50 and offers them to the listener in this abridged recording, for which he also serves as reader. Essentially, this is a rather large collection of aphorisms beginning "at 50," interspersed with reflections on Greene's youth, differences between 50-year-olds and the older and younger generations, folks who made it big before they turned 50, and tales of Greene's interviews or meetings with fiftyish celebrities over the past half century. As such, it's amusing and of some interest. It is not hilarious, not especially poignant, nor does it provide the listener with particularly useful tips on coping with being "over the hill." And, fortunately or unfortunately (depends on how you're handling being 50, I suppose), the author's observations on age don't seem to have as much in common with mine as I would have thought. The biggest problem lies in finding the audience to which this audio appeals. Nobody looks forward to 50. Having made it to 50, then what? For Greene fans only.?Cliff Glaviano, Bowling Green State Univ. Libs., Ohio
