Ivan and September Crane, ages 12 and 13, are left alone while their fisherman Dad is away at sea. Disregarding their father's specific instructions, they take their skiff across Bag Bay to town and are suddenly overtaken by a fierce autumn storm known as a williwaw. Ivan and September must now use every ounce of strength, courage, and ingenuity they possess to keep themselves afloat until help comes.

Ivan and September have two rules to obey while their fisherman father is delayed at sea: stay off the bay and don't hook up their video game to the radio batteries. But when Ivan goes against his father's orders, he breaks the shortwave radios -- the one link to the outside world from their remote Alaskan home. Their only choice is to get the radios fixed before their father finds out. And that means sneaking back and forth across moody Bag Bay in their tiny boat.
But autumn is an unpredictable season in Alaska, when clear skies can give way to sudden violent storms. And heading their way is the kind they fear most: a williwaw!About the Author:

He made his national broadcasting debut in 1984 as a commentator for National Public Radio's All Things Considered. He is the author of five books and has recorded fifteen audiocassettes.
