Jessica heard footsteps crunching in the gravel behind her. She whirled to see who was coming and found herself face-to-face with a young-looking guy wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, a baseball cap that looked too big for him pulled down low on his head. He's not old enough to be a spy, she thought, disappointed. He looks more like a lost Little Leaguer. He must be a student, Jessica decided, eyeing the SVU Engineering logo on his sweatshirt. She moved to the edge of the path without a word, planning to let him walk by.
"Um...miss?" the young guy said tentatively. "Were you waiting for a package?"
A totally unexpected thrill raced through her as Jessica realized that the guy was Nick's contact after all. She'd pulled it off!
"Yes," she said, holding out her hand. "Do you have it?"
The guy hesitated for a second, then extended a paper-wrapped parcel the size of a large textbook. Jessica tried to curb her excitement and nervousness as she took the package from him. The unusually long brim of the contact's baseball cap sheltered his face, and Jessica couldn't see him well under the shadow it created. Even so she got the distinct impression that he was tense, edgy--maybe even dangerous.
"Very good," she said airily, trying to disguise her fear. "I'll make sure the consulate gets these documents." She tucked the package under her arm and waited to see what would happen next. Nick's contact looked up at her for a second, seemingly confused, then ducked his head, hiding his face again.
"Aren't you supposed to give me something too?" he whispered hoarsely. Was she? Jessica racked her brain, trying to think. Of course! He expected to be paid for his documents, just like the guy she'd met before. A cold sensation of fear coursed through her as Jessica remembered how angry the other contact had become when he'd discovered she'd had no money. How could I have made the same stupid mistake twice? she asked herself frantically. Her breathing quickened--she had to think. Who knew what this guy would do if she stiffed him? He might even kill her! But Jessica didn't have any money. In fact, the only thing she could possible give him was...
"Here," she said abruptly, extending Lila's hatbox. "I think you'll find everything in here."
The contact nodded, taking the hatbox awkwardly by its pink string handles. A split second later he was sprinting down the path at a dead run. Oh man, Jessica groaned to herself as his thin form receded into the night, Lila's going to be furious! The thought of her best friend's certain displeasure temporarily marred Jessica's triumph, but it took only a few seconds for Jessica to put things back in perspective. If Lila was truly her best friend, then of course she'd want to do her part to help solve this mystery. And after all, Jessica told herself, looking down at the bundle she now held in both hands, I got the package. I just know this is the key to all Nick's secrets! Jessica smiled with satisfaction as she made her way back down the pathway toward the stairs and from there down to the parking lot. The science lot was deserted except for her Jeep and one or two other cars parked around the edges. As she walked toward the Jeep, Jessica congratulated herself on the fact that she'd driven to the meeting. Even though she hadn't originally planned to, now she'd be able to get back to her room that much faster to open up Nick's package and see what it contained. She knew it was documents, of course--she'd learned that by eavesdropping on Nick's phone conversation--but what type of documents would they be? There were so many different, exciting possibilities.Jessica turned the package over in her hands as she walked, feeling its weight. It didn't look like much--especially not after all the effort she'd expended to get it. The tightly taped brown paper that covered it was completely without markings to reveal its contents. "What little secrets do you hold?" she asked it in a playful whisper.
Suddenly a dazzling light ripped through the darkened parking lot, blinding her. "Freeze!" thundered a voice from somewhere nearby. Jessica faltered, terrified. She couldn't see, but she could hear running footsteps closing in from all side. "What...?" she tried to ask, turning toward the voice. "I said freeze! Don't move or I'll shoot!"
