A collection of "almost lost" episodes from the U.S. Navy in the Civil War--most of which have lain hidden  for 150 years. Navy spies, cattle raids, deep inland recons and shore assaults as well as a daunting battle on the far side of the planet--Civil War history you've never read before. Included in this new research is the story of Monitor's Unknown Mission; the first all-black Navy crew (months before the Emancipation Proclamation); and the solution to the riddle of the First Battle of Fort Butler. There are no "big name" battles here--just the story of the many critical roles played by the U.S. Navy, told through small-unit actions. After a century and a half, these stories are something new in Civil War history.

From the Author:

The "almost-lost" episodes in "A Dog Before a Soldier" are not rehashes of the big naval engagements of the Civil War. In fact, with the exception of the chapter on McDougal at Shimonoséki--which is well-known only in naval circles--all of the stories present either totally new research or a unique naval perspective on a known battle. As such, they have never been told before. If you are looking for an overview of the naval side of the war or a treatment of Mobile Bay, the Head of Passes, Vicksburg, Fort Fisher, Kearsarge & Alabama, or the Battle of the Ironclads, this is not the book you want. This is the history that took place "in the cracks" between those major events.

However, while each of the chapters in this book tells a unique and exciting story, when taken together they also illustrate some of the many roles played by the U.S. Navy in the Civil War. This is an important part of American history that is largely unsung, and the modern public is almost entirely ignorant of what the sailors and marines did in those four terrible years. Far from being the "junior partner" that many in the Army considered them, Navy warships--singly, in small squadrons, and great fleets--played a critical role in the Union victory. Without them, the war could easily have ended in favor of the Confederacy. This fact was recognized at the time by people in the South, but has been lost over the decades until it is now received wisdom that the Navy was more a feature than a factor in the war. Nothing could be further from the truth. The last chapter of this book makes this argument, and serves as a summation of what the preceding chapters represent. Like all of the other stories, it is comprised of hard facts and the opinions of the people who experienced the war first-hand.

About the Author:

Chuck Veit is founder of the U.S. Naval Landing Party, one of the few living history groups to portray the sailors and marines of the American Civil War. With fellow USNLP member Roger Kuchera, he is co-author of The USNLP Handbook for Civil War Reenactors, now in its fourth edition. Chuck is also president of the Navy & Marine Living History Association, a non-profit dedicated to promoting an awareness of the role played by the navies in the history of America. The Association supports the efforts of its member living history units with insurance, research information, collateral, reproduction tools and weapons, and involvement in projects such as the search for the Civil War's first submarine, Alligator, in which NMLHA is partnered with the Office of Naval Research and NOAA. The NMLHA website is open to the public and has been included in the curriculum of at least one major university's Underwater Archaeology department. Since inception, NMLHA has grown to twenty-four naval living history groups located from coast to coast; its members portray navies from the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

In addition to numerous articles published in Naval History magazine, Chuck has also reported on Alligator symposia in Groton, Norfolk and Philadelphia and written a museum report on the value of living history as a means of teaching naval history. He speaks with an estimated 10,000 visitors to the living history events he attends every year (NMLHA overall reaches about a quarter of a million). In cooperation with Dave Ekhardt, he researched and designed "The Navy in the Civil War" informational poster, which presents over five hundred naval events of that war.
