Forty years after the Second World War the author returns with his oldest son to the Netherlands, his native country . They visit the places where he grew up and encounter some of the same people with whom he shared his life then. On this journey he returns to the days of his youth, to the thoughts and feelings of a seven-year-old boy. Less than two years after the occupation by the Nazis he is first separated from his friends, then from his parents and finally from his sister. Now he is all by myself in a hostile, treacherous and dangerous world. At first it seems exciting. But soon he opens his eyes to the reality of a new life and he tries to adjust to it. When he talks to his son about those days, he is overwhelmed by strong emotions that he did not experience before and that he had never allowed to surface. He realize that this is not an ordinary journey but rather a return to a world frightening, yet endearing at the same time.
