Book by Chris Stapleton

The practice of pillaging Third World culture to spice an established popular performer's act is nothing new, but most of today's artists are quick to acknowledge foreign musicians and their unique sounds. The editors of this study examine several styles of music from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Readers are given a history of the development of a particular style and introduced to some of its major personalities. Each of the contributors are established commentators in their fields and knowledgeable about the music scene. Many photographs and a selected discography add to the enjoyment of this book. Somewhat out of place amid all the exotic locales are the chapters on American country music and Chicago-style blues, but ultimately this is an enlightening musical travelog. Recommended for libraries with strong music collections.
