The literature of slide collection and management is relatively undeveloped though the bibliography herein lists several hundred items on the topic dating from the 1960s to the present. In general, the literature consists of slide managers reporting on their own collections, and, though this information is useful to the hands-on librarian, theoretical progress requires the integration of principles of slide management as found in this work. Sutcliffe is the audiovisual librarian at the Learning Resources Centre, Calderdale College, Halifax, and has written a number of articles on slide librarianship. He synthesizes information on slide acquisitions, technical preparation of slides as library items, slide retrieval and cataloging, commercially available slide management packages, and medical slide collections and summarizes the literature of slide collection management. A strong point is the discussion of optical disc systems and how they may change the future of slide management by facilitating the replacement of physical slides with computer images.
