James D. G. Dunn has been one of the most
influential New Testament scholars of the late 20th and early 21st
centuries. His works have altered the very way biblical theologians
view Jesus and Paul. This book is written in gratitude of his influence
and mentorship. The focus of the work parallels the major research of
Dunn's career. It emphasizes the life and teachings of Jesus as
remembered by his disciples, the new perspective on Paul, teachings in
the Pauline letters, and relevant topics related to ancient Judaism,
the Law, Soteriology and Christology in the New Testament.

In
2005 another festschrift for James D. G. Dunn's 65th birthday was published
with essays by Professor Dunn's many colleagues and friends. In this
volume, a new generation of scholars, who are being widely recognized
in their own contributions and publications, now honour their former teacher
and demonstrate to the scholastic community the breadth of his
influence.

Review:

"Colleagues, former students, and others around the world influenced by British New Testament scholar Dunn present 17 essays pivoting on the two central figures in the establishment of Christianity. Their topics include the voice of Jesus and the voice of Matthew in three parables, boundary challenges to the woman who anoints Jesus in Luke 7:36-50, Barabbas remembered, past and present antisemitic interpretation of Judas Iscariot, evidence from Hebrews about the worship of Jesus among early Christians, Paul and the nature of apostleship in Luke-Acts, the intertextual semantics of Leviticus 18:5 in Galatians and Romans, Romans 1:5 and Israel's triumphant king, the cheirograph in Colossians 2:14 and the Ephesian connection, and Paul's strategy for forging ties of kinship." -Eithne O'Leyne, BOOK NEWS, Inc.

'The clarity and accessability of the arguments is impressive.' churchtimes.co.uk

"The first ten essays in this volume honoring Professor Dunn deal with Jesus and the Gospels: J.F. McGrath on written islands in an oral stream—Gospel and oral traditions; S.I. Wright on debtors, laborers, and virgins—the voice of Jesus and the voice of Matthew in three parables; J.J. Kanagaraj on Jesus' message of the kingdom of God—present and future tensions revisited; E.J. Christiansen on sinner according to the words of the Law, righteous by works of love—boundary challenges in relation to the woman who anoints Jesus (Lk 7:36-50); G.H. Twelftree on Jesus and magic in Luke-Acts; H.K. Bond on Barabbas remembered; A.W. Zwiep on Judas and the Jews—anti-Semitic interpretation of Judas Iscariot, past and present; J.M C. Scott on Jews or Christians—the opponents of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel; S.J. Gathercole on NT Christology in recent British scholarship—a sketch of distinctives and debates; and K.L. Schenck on the worship of Jesus among early Christians—the evidence of Hebrews. The remaining seven papers concern Paul and his letters: Robertson on inheriting that agitator's as an athlete (Gal 2:2)—the impact of Hab 2:2-4 on Paul's apostolic commission; Mohrmann on 'doing' and 'living'—the intertextual semantics of Lev 18:5 in Galatians and Romans; D. Garlington on Israel's triumphant king—Rom 1:5 and the Scriptures of Israel; L.-k. Lo on Paul and ethnicity—the paradigm of globalization; A.R. Bevere on the cheirograph in Col 2:14 and the Ephesian connection; and J. Byron on the epistle to Philemon—Paul's strategy for forging the ties of kinship. Also included are forewords by R.B. Hays and N.T. Wright, a preface by the editors, and a select bibliography of Dunn's publications."
-New Testament Abstracts, Vol. 54

The themes of this book are very diverse, but the quality of contributions is generally high. This is an interesting volume honouring a very fine scholar. (Sanford Lakoff)
