About the Author:

Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was born in Charlton, Kent. In 1890, aged sixteen, he began work in the statistics department of the London office of Anglo-American Oil. In 1907 he published his first collection of poems under the pseudonym Walter Ramal, but he soon established a wide popular reputation in his own name as a leading poet of the Georgian period with volumes like The Listeners (1912), Motley (1918) and The Veil (1921). He also wrote poetry and short stories for younger readers; Peacock Pie (1913), a collection of poems for children, is now considered a twentieth-century classic.Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was born in Charlton, Kent. From School Library Journal:

Grade 4 Up-- A worthy edition of a poetry classic. Seventy-five years after its publication, Peacock Pie still brims with sweetness, melancholy, and wonderful images re-establishing de la Mare as a master creator of other worlds and an illuminator of this one. This anniversary edition treats de la Mare's masterpiece with the respect it deserves. The poems are placed cleanly on the page. Brierley's accompanying sketches and watercolors offer a thoughtful counterpoint to the poems--they too are wistful, enigmatic impressions. Readers, like de la Mare's Jack, may be "Tired of Books," but they will not soon tire of this one. --Kathleen Whalin, formerly at Public Library of Columbus and Franklin County, OH
