Synopsis
Wat de impressionisten in de schilderkunst teweegbrachten, heeft Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) voor de muziek hij heeft haar bevrijd uit oude structuren, hij heeft nieuwe vormen, kleuren en timbres aangedragen, hij heeft vers bloed gebracht in het levende wezen dat zij is.Natuurlijk is luisteren naar zijn werk het eerste middel om dat te ontdekken. Maar ook de duizenden brieven die Debussy schreef, geven een rijk beeld van zijn onconventioneel innerlijk leven en scheppend vermogen. Zijn proza is soms grillig en geestig, maar altijd elegant en hoffelijk, al velt de schrijver soms een scherp oordeel over mens en muziek. Wie die brieven leest, wordt bovendien deelgenoot van de grote kring van kunstenaars - schilders, schrijvers en componisten - die in het fin de siècle hun inspiratie ontleenden aan nieuwe aan wat uit verre oorden tot hen kwam op de grote wereldtentoonstellingen, aan de wereld van de mythologie, aan die van het kind en aan de krachten van de natuur.Uit die overvloed aan brieven is hier een keuze gemaakt die recht doet aan de veelkleurige wereld van Debussy; brieven waarin hij zijn opvattingen over muziek weergeeft, over liefde en vriendschap, over zijn materiële noden en, natuurlijk, over zijn eigen werk. De brieven zijn door de samensteller geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van korte levensschetsen. Bovendien heeft hij uit iedere periode een compositie gekozen en daarvan een persoonlijke impressie gegeven.
