PreSchool-Grade 1 This picture book collection of 20 finger plays not generally known to American children presents some problems. While the cartoon illustrations are colorful and pleasingly silly, the arrangement of pictures which show hand positions along with pictures which show plot may be confusing. Some of the pictures of hand positions are hard to decipher. In addition, several of the pictures and poems with multiple verses are set up to look as if they read across the page when actually they are to be read up and down. Mild Briticisms and British phraseology will probably not be a problem for most children. While the introduction clearly sets this book up as one for parents to share with children, librarians may want to acquire it for use in preschool story hours. However, those that have Marc Brown's Finger Rhymes (1980) and Hand Rhymes (1985, both Dutton) or Tom Glazer's Eye Winker, Tom Tinker, Chin Chopper (Doubleday, 1978) can pass it by.
