In this new edition of a work first published in 1973, the pianist Charles Rosen sets out to answer the question of what actually constitutes the manner, the way of composing, that links Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The text is accompanied by a CD.

Review
Written in 1970, this winner of the National Book Award is perhaps the best guide to the music of the late 18th century that the reader is likely to find. Rosen defines classical music (which, in this case, is probably more properly rendered "Classical," as it refers to that specific style) through the music of its greatest geniuses: Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. This is serious stuff, but well worth the effort for the student of classical music. There are many printed musical illustrations; you'll get more out of this book if you read music. This volume has a logical successor in Rosen's The Romantic Generation. A revised version in hardcover is due later this year.
About the Author
Charles Rosen, professor of music and social thought at the University of Chicago, has also taught at the State University of New York-Stony Brook and delivered the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University. His recitals and other performances have won the highest critical acclaim, as have his books, The Classical Style and The Romantic Generation. When he is not concertizing, Rosen lives in New York.
