9780575400061: Nicholas and Alexandra (Tragic, Compelling Story of the Last Tsar and His Family)

The story of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra has fired the world's imagination ever since their violent deaths during the Russian Revolution. In this biography, first published in 1967, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Massie sets out to show how the personal tragedy of the young heir's haemophilia, and the decisive influence it brought Rasputin, became fatally linked with the collapse of Imperial Russia. The book presents an account of one of history's most dramatic episodes, and a portrait of the two people caught at the centre of the maelstrom.

About the Author:

Robert K Massie was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1929. He studied American History at Yale University and Modern European History at Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes scholar. He lives in Irvington, New York.

From AudioFile:

Robert Massie's sympathetic portrait of Russia's last czar and his family was a bestseller thirty years ago and has enjoyed renewed interest since the fall of communism. Massie and Crouse read alternating sections, a technique that makes the long narrative more easily digested. Massie, the academic, is authoritative, if not dramatic; Crouse holds the listener's attention with her smooth, even delivery, and is convincing in handling Russian words. The material in this program is fascinating, particularly Massie's heart-wrenching account of the young heir Alexis's suffering from hemophilia. The overall effect humanizes a mythical family that had a far-reaching effect on the unfolding of the twentieth century. D.B. An AUDIFILE Earphones Award Winner. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Book Description Orion Publishing Co, United Kingdom, 2000. Paperback. Book Condition: New. UK ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book. The tragic, compelling story of the last Tsar and his familyNicholas Alexandra is the internationally famous biography from Pulitzer prize-winner Robert Massie. Massie shows conclusively how the personal curse of the young heir s haemophilia, and the decisive influence it brought Rasputin, became fatally linked with the collapse of Imperial Russia. As an engrossing account of one of the century s most dramatic episodes - and an intimate portrait of two people caught at the centre of a maelstrom - Nicholas Alexandra is unlikely ever to be surpassed. The story of the last Tsar has probably never been so powerfully - and so accurately - told Guardian. Bookseller Inventory # AA29780575400061
