Through Sophie s Eyes
How Can You Dance If You Can t Hear the Music?
Have you ever wondered what it s like to be deaf? Sophie knows. She lives in a world without sound. Bright and determined, one day she excitedly tells her mother she wants to take a dance class. But dancing turns out to be less of a problem than dealing with the other dancers. Thanks to the efforts of the dance teacher, the class members transformation from doubting to understanding is as heartwarming as Sophie s triumph with dance. Through Sophie s Eyes is a wonderful book of inspiration for all children.
The book is beautifully illustrated, and includes finger spell diagrams.

Catherine Gibson taught dance to preschool children most of her adult life. She decided to take sign language classes at the American School For the Deaf, in West Hartford, CT. Cathy thought that signing was beautiful and looked like a form of dance. She was introduced to the preschooler at the school for the deaf and decided to teach dance through sign language and body movements. She was so touched by the children and their spirit, she decided to write this children's book.
