This young adult novel in the style of Richard Peck can be called urban Americana. It is a novel about a young Irish teenage boy named Michael Murray and his friends, and their coming of age in the bygone New York City that existed during the early days of the Second World War.
The Boys from Vinegar Hill is a story about the Jewish Kids who lived at the Hebrew Orphan Asylum (H.O.A) during World War II. The H.O.A. was located between 136th & 138th Streets on Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan. The orphaned Jewish kids living at the H.O.A. in a tough Irish neighborhood called Vinegar Hill in 1943 were only safe from local bullies by walking in groups. Mike's love for his friends and his neighborhood carries over to the battlefields of France where Mike is wounded while taking out a German machine gun nest only to be attended by a Jewish medic -- one of his friends from The H.O.A.
This book is told with a lot of attention to detail from a real place and real people. The author feels The Boys from Vinegar Hill is destined to become a beloved novel that will be compared to A Long Way from Chicago, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and even a little bit of Angela s Ashes for good measure.
