Michael Dulin is a native of Brookside, Alabama. From the age of two, it was apparent that he had an exceptional gift for music. After attending Alabama School of Fine Arts, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Birmingham-Southern College, where he was twice awarded the Alys Robinson Stephens Piano Prize. He completed his musical studies at The Juilliard School in New York, working with master teacher and concert pianist Adele Marcus. He was a semi-finalist and audience favorite in the Carnegie Hall International Piano Competition, and was awarded the Silver Medal in the Second Annual International Audio-Video Competition in New York. In addition to performing his original music throughout the United States, Michael appears both solo and with orchestra in performances of classical music. He has also toured as keyboardist with the legendary Motown group, the Temptations. Michael's albums of original music have twice been awarded the prestigious Lifestyle Music Award. FOUR of his albums have reached the #1 spot on Zone Music Reporter's World Airplay Charts. His music has been licensed for release in South America, Korea, Japan and Malaysia. Dulin and business partner Daniel Whiteside own and operate PSI Studios, a digital recording facility in Birmingham, Alabama. Michael is president of Equity Digital and Equity Digital Music. Christmas At Our House songbook Michael Dulin 2012 / Equity Digital 11 songs / 81 pages Christmas At Our House is the companion songbook to Michael Dulin s 2005 CD by the same name and contains all of the songs on the recording except the reprise of O Come All Ye Faithful that closes the album. This is a really beautiful book, with spiral binding, a full color cover that matches the CD, and nice crisp print. The music is well-spaced and clear, and the music is printed on a slightly heavier paper stock that should be very durable but does note interfere with page turns. If you are familiar with Michael s music (and I have to assume you are if you re reading this review!), you know that he s one of the best pianists on the planet. And if you ve played any of his sheet music, you know that it isn t easy. This book is not an exception. Early-advanced and advanced pianists will find the music a bit challenging, but not impossible by any means. Giving the tricky passages some extra time and attention will make the pieces smooth out fairly quickly. These transcriptions (transcribed by Dulin himself, and edited and proofed by me) were intended to be as close to note-for-note to the recording as possible, so they will be challenging for most pianists. However, like so many great pieces of classical music, once you have them, you ve accomplished something and will enjoy the music forever. This is an exceptional sheet music book and I give it my highest recommendation. The pieces included, the keys they are in, and the number of pages are listed as follows: Deck the Halls - key of G (1 sharp) / Eb (3 flats) - 7 pages O Come Emmanuel - key of F minor (4 flats) - 6 pages Silent Night - key of C (0 sharps or flats) / D (2 sharps) - 7 pages The First Noel - key of F (1 flat) / G (1 sharp) - 6 pages It Came Upon a Midnight Clear - key of Bb (2 flats) - 6 pages Joy to the World - key of G (1 sharp) / Eb (3 flats) - 6 pages Mary s Babe s a-Sleeping* - key of A minor (0 sharps or flats) - 7 pages O Come All Ye Faithful - key of F (1 flat) / Db (5 flats) - 6 pages Away In a Manger - key of G (1 sharp) / Eb (3 flats) / Db (5 flats) - 9 pages O Holy Night - key of C (0 sharps or flats) / Eb (3 flats) - 9 pages We Three Kings - key of E minor (1 sharp) - 8 pages *composed by Michael Dulin Kathy Parsons 12/4/12 --MainlyPiano.com
I spent last night reading through a book of beautiful Christmas solos that I think you will enjoy! Christmas At Our House by Michael Dulin is a collection of early advanced pieces appropriate for recitals, Christmas parties, contemporary worship services, or just playing for pleasure. Everyone loves playing and hearing Christmas carols, and my students are always motivated to practice these familiar favorites. Sometimes though, I must confess I get a little tired of the same old treatments of these pieces year after year. Dulin's beautiful arrangements breathe new life into your favorite Christmas songs. Each piece is substantial at 6 or more pages, and would make a lovely addition to a Christmas recital, whether you assign it to a more advanced student or play it yourself. The contemporary harmonies give these arrangements a fresh sound, and good high school players should find them appealing. I particularly like the fact that the virtuosic elements are incorporated organically, rather than sounding like a gratuitous opportunity to show off. Some of the challenges in these pieces include arpeggiated figures that span a tenth, hemiola, and cadenza-like runs. Composer Michael Dulin studied piano performance at Birmingham-Southern College and at Juilliard, and is an award-winning performer and composer. His work as a serious classical pianist informs these compositions. --The Piano Studio
Michael Dulin Christmas at Our House Equity Digital Taking on the traditional role, Birmingham pianist Michael Dulin's thoughtful music reminds us of every Christmas past. There is enough uniqueness and variety to his solo piano offerings to give us hopes for many a Christmas future. He starts us out with an energetic version of Deck the Halls. You will be inspired to go out and decorate somebody's halls. O Come Emmanuel is an outstanding cut and my favorite on this album. It has deep beauty and a pensiveness that promotes holiday dreams. Michael's distinctive melodic brand is deeply etched on the glorious tune Joy to the World and his blending of styles teases you like a giant red bow on a tiny package as you listen to Away in the Manger. Dulin's music will introduce your guests and family to the many smiling musical faces of the holidays. Rating: Excellent R. J. Lannan, New Age Reporter --New Age Reporter
