A pedagogy of reading comprehension has long been needed but has not yet been forthcoming. Instruction has been investigated; reading has been investigated. Never have the two been studied together. Now, new ways of investigating the theories, strategies, and processes of reading comprehension plus the trend toward using the classroom as a research site for teaching have made the combining of comprehension and instruction possible. We can examine reading comprehension as an interactive process and simultaneously examine how instruction occurs in the fluid, complex workplace of the classroom. The combination is the basis of this book.
