Book Description Reed, Wellington, 1975. Hard Cover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Scows and Scowmen of Auckland" Ted Ashby's account of these craft, unique to the NZ coast, and the hardy men who manned them, is literally the utimate guide to these little ships. They were built mailnly around Auckland and the Far North and used mostly in northern waters. In hull form and design the scow was no ship of great beauty, but with fore-and-aft rig and schooner-like sail-plan they became lovely little ships. They were versatile too --- flat-bottom, they could be found way up tidal creeks, high and dry when the tide was out and were maids of all work when it came to cargoes. Timber, huge logs (chained across as deck cargo), sheep and cattle, coal and sand, firewood plus general goods to name just a few of the many types of load. Ted Ashby had a 50-year relationship with scows, serving aboard a number and framiliar with many more. His book can be regarded as a tribute to the scows. .About 125 of them were built from the 1870s to the 1920s, but few remain today so "Phantom Fleet" is a poignant reminder of the scows, which ranged from relatively small craft up to the 128ft long, three masted-top sail schooner rigged Zingara. Summed up in a few words:"All you ever want to know about scows!" First editiion from Reed of 1975. 167 pages including fleet list of Auckland scows, glossary and index, illustrated throughout with more than 100 b/w photos, scale plan for scow Owhiti, map of Auckland/Hauraki Gulf area. Oatmeal hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, ink name date gift inscription to FFEP, text block otherwise also NF. Colour art/pictorial DJ is VG with small section missing top rear panel adjacent spine, two tape repaired short tears, light creasing top front edge, few chips. Size: 26.5cm By 20cm.
