Magnificent full page colour art representations of 37 species of the Paphiopedilum species, the now rare orchids of South East Asia, are the outstanding feature of this book. The artist died in New Zealand in 1979 as the book was in the final stages of preparation. His wife and Ronald Roy, an expert in this field of botany, completed the project with Robin providing a chapter on the place of the orchid in European society and compiling much of the research material. Ronald compiled the text accompaning each colour plate. Other material includes the discovery of the South East Asian varieties, biography of the artist and a complete list of the species in rhe genus. Forward by Sir George Taylor, former director Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Vertical folio format, 109 pages including species list, bibliography and index. The majority of the 37 colour plates are accompanied by detail sketches below the text, numerous other b/w illustrations. Soft orange hard covers with dark front/spine titles VG+ with hint of narrow fading top left front, text block excellent.
