Grade 4-6-- Desperate to be liked, Veronica obsesses about her soon-to-be neighbor, Crystal Webb. Sure enough the two get on famously, and Veronica proudly introduces her at school. To her dismay, Crystal is a hit on her own. When friend Chris finds Veronica in tears, he comforts her with what becomes the central image of the novel: Veronica has been briefly--and temporarily--"eclipsed" by the newcomer. Reassured, she joins with Crystal to organize a costumed protest to save their branch library. When it is televised, Crystal's family suddenly packs to leave; it turns out that her mother is fleeing an estranged (although not dangerous) husband, packing up each time she fears discovery. Improbably, the strength of Veronica's friendship causes Mrs. Webb to face their situation, and everything ends happily ever after. The implausible ending leaves a cloying aftertaste. In general, the adult characters are at best mystifying and at worst distasteful. However, the young people emerge with pleasing complexity. Readers will identify with Veronica's anxiety to be liked and will recognize her maturity when she accepts her new friend's success. Due to its unevenness, this book will be enjoyed primarily by fans of the earlier books about Veronica. --Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, MA
