A neon blue horse carries a girl into the night sky, where she picks a bouquet of stars and feeds them to her steed

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- An unexceptional picture book fantasy. One rainy night a child looks out her bedroom window and likens branches moving in the wind to a horse's tangled mane. She dreams that a Blue Night Horse made of rain takes her for a ride as she sleeps, and that she feeds it bouquets of star jasmines. The mare returns her to bed by morning, and she awakens to find that the rain is over. The rhyming text and pastel watercolors try to create a dream state, but neither are at all compelling. The images and mood seem derivative and the art, which features a pretty child with tousled hair and flowing nightgown and the blue horse with a waving mane, seems heavily influenced by the work of Susan Jeffers. The idea of herds of blue horses celebrating their 40th anniversary of flying by night by kidnapping sleeping children won't say much to youngsters. --Marilyn Iarusso, New York Public Library
