As he stands at bat for the first time for his Little League baseball team, a young boy reflects about all the effort it took to get to where he is now.

Grade 2-4-- Encouraged by his friend Peter, a veteran of organized baseball, novice Nick tries out for the team. As Nick takes his first league championship at-bat, he remembers how he got there. In flashback, readers see the raw rookie learning the ropes from the kindly coaching staff, as well as team members commiserating over missed plays and praising each other's good efforts. Coming back to the present, Nick swings, makes contact, and takes off for first base. The end. The full-color photographs of a real team in action are sure to catch the attention of browsing sports fans. Johnson's prose, however, is less successful, as it dryly recounts a fictional story intermingled with baseball how-to's. Dickmeyer's Baseball Is For Me (Lerner, 1978) will better serve those looking for instruction. Those looking for a simple baseball story may be put off by Johnson's picture book format, and the use of flashback and the abrupt ending will be confusing to beginning readers. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Lib . , Randolph, MA
