Grade 2-4-- An introduction to the human body that covers the skin, bones, muscles, eyes, ears, teeth, and major organs. The text is not divided into chapters; rather, it flows logically from subject to subject in a conversational tone that includes lots of questions and suggestions designed to involve readers. Each topic is presented in a page or two; there is no attempt to provide extensive information about the various systems--just a brief look at the particular organs and their functions. Look is the key word here, as most pages show large, full-color, close-up photos of "color enhanced and magnified" body parts. They are beautifully executed, and will compel most readers to look further. The glossary of body parts serves as the index, which may be initially confusing. While this is more limited in scope than Gilda Berger's The Human Body (Doubleday, 1989) or Lionel Bender's The Body: Through the Microscope (Gloucester Pr, 1990), which features similar visuals, it will appeal to those searching for accessible nonfiction and for classroom teachers beginning units on the body. --Denise L.
