Review:

Charles Lindbergh is fascinating both as a complicated man and as a case study of the problematic nature of "heroes." Lindbergh's famous flight put him in the history books and made him the toast of America. The tragic kidnapping of his child made his name even more familiar. But his peculiar politics and wartime actions, which included Nazi affiliations and leadership of the original "America First" movement opposing war against Germany, added a notorious quality to his fame. Pulling no punches, this biography tells the interesting story of the man and the legends that surround Lindbergh. The well-researched book draws from interviews and includes period photos. (Ages 10 and up)

From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up?Denenberg presents Lindbergh not only as aviation's superstar, but also as a tarnished hero who espoused the German cause on the eve of World War II. Readers view the Lone Eagle as a courageous and committed man, yet one capable of bad judgment and bigotry. Frequent use of Lindbergh's own words and quotations from various sources shore up the author's assessment. The section on the Lindbergh baby kidnapping reads like suspense fiction and is unsettling in its potent (but unoriginal) suggestion that Bruno Hauptmann's conviction was a miscarriage of justice. Although Denenberg doesn't generally stint on detail, he skims over Lindbergh's valuable contributions to environmental causes and refers to the World Wildlife Fund as the World Wildlife Foundation. Also, he fails to mention Lindbergh's much-publicized expedition to save the Tasaday tribe from encroaching civilization. Nevertheless, these omissions are minimal when one considers the whole book. Black-and-white photographs and reproductions appear throughout but are often dark and, in some cases, quite small. Blythe Randolph's Charles Lindbergh (Watts, 1990; o.p.) offers larger and brighter illustrations. The source notes, bibliography, and index are extensive. A solidly written and provocative portrait of a controversial American hero.?Pat Katka, formerly at San Diego Public Library
