From School Library Journal:

Gr 1-4--Teachers could use this kit to teach an entire thematic unit on China without having to consult another source for information. The tape provides the sounds of spoken Mandarin Chinese to help students understand a culture that is quite foreign to many American children. The tape consists of songs, folk tales, and interviews that cover many aspects of Chinese life as seen through the eyes of a young child. Much of the tape features an adult male questioning a nine-year-old Chinese boy about how he celebrates festivals, his school life, and family. Some of the festivals covered are the Spring, Lantern, Harvest Moon, and Birthday ceremonies. For each, the book includes recipes, craft activities, games and some background information. The only flaw is the lack of a index to the tape's contents; otherwise, elementary teachers will find this kit extremely useful as it contains all the elements that make up whole language classrooms today. There are ties to culture, music, geography, and established good children's literature. Children's books utilized for literature tie-in are City of Dragons by L. Yep, Great Wall of China by L. Fisher, Song of Mu Lan by J. Lee, and Lon Po Po by E. Young. Teachers planning a unit on China will want to includethis kit.-Linda R. Skeele, Western Elementary School, Georgetown, KY
