While most people feel that they can make no significant change in the politics of Washington, four special people have conspired to create a benevolent dictatorship which they are convinced will make this country a much better place. All they have to do is create massive public unrest with destructive inflation, deadly bombings, and massiveriots. The only obstacle in their way is an unlikely hero in the swamp called Washington who is swept from the halls of Congress, across the Swiss Alps, and into the bowels of the Lincoln Memorial. He stumbles his way through seductions, computer tricks, murders, and duplicity to save his own life and the democracy he believes should survive.

From the Author:

As an economics major in college, I was always a frustrated English major. Frustrated because I loved reading and thought that I could write novels, maybe not the literary novels I was reading, but books that would be enjoyable. Like so many young people, I put off doing what I really would have loved to do and, instead, did what I knew I was good at and could make a living doing. But always with the idea that maybe I would write a novel one day.

The idea for BENEVOLENCE percolated around my head for a number of years until my wife (behind every successful man, etc. etc.!) finally convinced me to write it instead of just thinking about it. The experience of writing the book was a complete joy to me. Developing characters, creating completely plausible plot lines, ultimately making an idea come to life was fun. Yes, it was a lot of work, especially all the re-writes. Since I am an economist by training, almost every revision involved at paring down or omitting previously included discussion of economics (believe me, no one will learn any economics from this book). There was also the cutting out of complete scenes, assuring a clear and consistent point of view, and in general making the book more of a pleasure to read. That, ultimately, has been my goal.

The fun part ended, however, when it came time to try to get someone to publish the manuscript. And after all, publication is supposed to be the assertion that the book is worthwhile to someone else. Well, as any would-be author will tell you, if getting a publisher is nearly impossible, finding an agent to represent a manuscript is a Herculean effort. So much work, so many words, are submitted to agents that they simply do not have time to give a particular piece of work the consideration it possibly deserves.

In the end, I decided to go the on-line route. Publishing a book on-line where it can be downloaded electronically gives many more authors the opportunities to put their work in front of the public.

I hope that some people will find the excerpts appealing and the idea of the story entertaining and well written If you do, and you end up buying a copy, enjoy it with my best wishes.
