"Best Evidence" takes you along on an investigative reporter's three-year quest to uncover the best scientific evidence for ESP, psychokinesis, mental healing, ghosts and poltergeists, dowsing, mediums, near-death experiences, reincarnation, and other "impossible" phenomena. A national Gallup Poll found that 93 percent of Americans believe in one or more paranormal phenomena that science can't explain and won't accept. Chances are, you're one of them. At the dawn of the 21st century, despite being reared on science and skepticism, people of every country and culture continue to experience and report paranormal phenomena that shouldn't exist. Investigative reporter Michael Schmicker tracked down the best scientific evidence for these phenomena that refuse to disappear. No National Enquirer nonsense here. Michael searched through sober parapsychology journals and monographs; puzzled over statistics-stuffed psychokinesis studies from Princeton University and reincarnation research from the University of Virginia; read through 140 books from the 1894 classic ghost study "Phantasms of the Living," to "Mindsight," a fascinating 1999 study of near-death and out-of-body experiences in the blind; discovered surprising endorsements of psychic research from light bulb inventor Thomas Edison and Xerox machine inventor Chester Carlson, psychologists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell; tracked fiery academic debates on the Internet; exchanged email with poltergeist hunters; and even spent an evening at a mind-bending, spoon-bending party in Nevada. In the 14 years since it was first published, "Best Evidence" has emerged as a classic in the field of scientific anomalies research -- praised for its balance and objectivity, its investigation of multiple paranormal phenomena; and its footnoted sources. "Best Evidence" has served as a textbook for courses at three different U.S. universities. If you're seriously interested in paranormal phenomena, start with this book.

Review:

In Best Evidence, Michael Schmicker assembles scientific documentation for experiences that many readers intuitively believe are real, despite mainstream skepticism: ESP, psychokinesis, mental healing, ghosts and poltergeists, dowsing, mediums, near-death experiences, reincarnation, and, as Schmicker puts it, "Other Impossible Phenomena That Refuse to Disappear." Expect a credible collection of convincing evidence, such as a published report in the American Journal of Diseases of Children in which a Seattle doctor offers a detailed account of a near-death experience. Or a 1995 report from the CIA on the practice of remote viewing, in which the U.S. government hired psychics to spy on other countries. Other evidence is presented to convince readers of death-bed visions, ghosts and poltergeists, and reincarnation. While anyone can manipulate data to draw their own conclusions, Schmicker's evenhanded, journalistic tone brings credibility and a no-nonsense tone to these esoteric discussions. He also possesses a smooth, accessible writing style that makes it easy to digest the research, studies, and data that his book is based upon. After each chapter, he offers a "Highly Recommended Reading" list so readers can continue their own research. --Gail Hudson

From the Author:

I'm still hoping to come out with a revised and updated 3rd Edition in time for the book's 15th anniversary (2016). The project was delayed while I wrote my debut novel, "The Witch of Napoli" -- historical fiction with a paranormal twist, set in Italy and England in 1899. Praised by Kirkus Reviews as an "enchanting and graceful narrative that absorbs readers from the first page," it resurrects the bitter, 19th century battle between Science and religion over the possibility of an afterlife. It's available in both paperback ($12.99) and Kindle e-book ($3.99). The novel was inspired by the true-life story of Italian Spiritualist medium Eusapia Palladino (1854-1918), a fiery-tempered, earthy, middle-aged Neapolitan woman who levitated tables and conjured up spirits of the dead in dimly-lit rooms all across Europe at the end of the 19th century. Her psychic powers baffled Nobel Prize-winning scientists, captivated aristocracy from Paris to Vienna, and enraged the powerful Catholic Church which suspected her paranormal feats were the work of Satan. Her scandalous flirtations, her meteoric rise to fame, her humiliating fall and miraculous redemption made world headlines at the time (when she died, she earned an obituary in the New York Times). I invite you to check  it out!

Book Description iUniverse. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 340 pages. Dimensions: 8.8in. x 6.0in. x 1.0in. a dazzling journey into one of the most important areas of science that has ever existed Dr. Larry Dossey MD, New York Times best-selling author of Reinventing Medicine. Best Evidence is indeed one if not the best itself of the major books explaining and offering proof that psi phenomena are here to stay whether we like it or not Fred Alan Wolf, Ph. D, physicist and National Book Award winning author of Mind Into Matter, Taking the Quantum Leap. My highest recommendation not just one but a half-dozen astounding stories, any one of which can change the way we think about the nature of reality Dean Radin, Ph. D, author of The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena. an important book Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut and author of Way of the Explorer: Psychic Exploration For skeptics and cautious believers alike, a splendid introduction to impossible phenomena that refuse to disappear Stanley Krippner, Ph. D, Co-Editor, Varieties of Anomalous Experience: Examining the Scientific Evidence. Hard line skeptics wont be pleased, but Schmicker has done his homework an excellent survey of the strongest evidence Marcello Truzzi, Ph. D, Center for Scientific Anomalies Research This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9780595219063
