9780595292851: Crib Sheets Are You Covered? New Parent Sleep Deprivation Solutions: Practical and Effective Expectant Parent Strategies

Sleep deprivation is undeniably the hardest part of parenting in baby's fist months. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborns feed 8 to 12 times a day-that means 2 to 3 hour sleep intervals for mom and dad! Clearly, the traditional advice, "sleep when baby sleeps," isn't enough. Crib Sheets takes you further, offering practical solutions focused on parent actions rather than those of an unpredictable newborn. Crib Sheets helps you prepare now before birth to get the most sleep possible. And before birth is the best time to prepare because you'll simply be too busy and exhausted after baby arrives. With this book you'll learn about:The secret to maximizing parent sleepStrategic placement of baby items and useful toolsMaking big brother or sister more self-reliantThe secret to frustration-free cooking with babyPreventing sibling interruption of parent and baby nap timeAccomplishing the three most common errands without your vehicleGetting your brood in and out of the car more quicklyMinimizing bill payment, correspondence, and appointment time and more!Plus, each chapter features a handy tear-out "crib sheet" to help you prepare!

From the Author:

This is the book I wish I had when I was pregnant! Crib Sheets is the only book on the market helping parents prepare before birth to get the most sleep possible after. The traditional advice "sleep when baby sleeps" isn’t enough—parents can't and don't always sleep when baby sleeps. Unrelenting responsibilities such as work, shopping, bill paying, and cooking are not always done with baby awake. What then? Crib Sheets takes parents further, they learn: what tasks parents usually do with baby asleep, why, and how to minimize them in number and duration; what tasks to do only with baby awake, why, and what they'll need and where to put it; how the 15 minute "baby contentment window" saves time when cooking with baby; strategic placement of baby items and useful tools; how to accomplish the three most common errands without use of their vehicle; how to limit interruption of baby and parent naps by making siblings more self-reliant; how to minimize bill payment and appointment time; how to get kids in and out of the car faster; and more! Each chapter’s tear-out "crib sheet" provides parents with a handy "to-do list" of what steps to take.

Can Crib Sheets help parents who have a newborn? Yes! Many parents don't realize sleep deprivation is such a big problem until after they have their baby. Although the book was written to help parents avoid the problem by preparing pre-baby, the methods are just as effective when implemented after birth.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Gardner is an attorney and mother of three children under age seven. In 1996, she was four months pregnant with her first child when she took the grueling three day California Bar Exam and passed. Anticipating the exhaustion of caring for a newborn and working full-time as an attorney, she searched for books that could help her prepare. Surprisingly, she could not find any that focused on what expectant parents could do pre-baby to get more sleep post. During her son’s first months, she was exhausted and frustrated that there seemed to be nothing to do except suffer and wait it out. After a year of litigation practice at a large law firm, she left to be a full-time mom. Anticipating that she would have more children, she formulated a plan to reduce new parent fatigue. When her second son was born in 1998, she was better prepared. By the time her daughter was born in January 2002, her pre-baby preparation methods proved so effective that many of her friends and relatives commented on how surprisingly rested and productive she was; "What’s your secret?" they asked. Rather than repeatedly advise, Elizabeth wrote an expectant parent guide to give out. It was during this process that she realized she had the makings of a book! Thanks to her pre-baby preparation methods, she had ample free time to share what she learned by writing Crib Sheets—all while caring for a two-month-old baby, a three-year-old, and a five-year-old. In 2002, Elizabeth established the Crib Sheets website through which she sold her first edition "homemade" copies of the book to parents in the United States and Canada. After finding a publisher in 2003, the second edition was published in 2004. Elizabeth is also known as the founder of "San Diego Playgrounds"—a popular free website helping San Diego area families, schools, and playgroups find playgrounds. Elizabeth and her family reside in Escondido, CA.
