The mystery has plenty of snakes and twists as well as characters that step right off the pages. -A Booklist Editor's Choice Book "With a fine hand for Gothic embroidery and a nifty surprise conclusion that ties up all the loose ends, Wallace has delivered another very satisfying read." -School Library Journal Winner of the Mystery Writers of America EDGAR AWARD

About the Author:

Barbara Brooks Wallace, born in China of American parents, had crossed the Pacific Ocean nine times before returning finally to live in the United States. Their first stop was always San Francisco, so that city has forever remained a mystical, magical place for her. It's not surprising that it one day became the setting for her PEPPERMINTS IN THE PARLOR, forerunner of four Mystery Writers of America EDGAR nominated books, and two EDGAR winners.

From AudioFile:

Taddy experiences the unpredictability of life when he finds himself alone and in danger. Jeff Woodman's warm, generous tones and expert pacing draw us into the desperate world of an 11-year-old boy who is scooped up by two scoundrels and faces the odious choice of the dreaded workhouse or servitude at Neezer's Inn. From the chortles of Taddy's new friend Beetle and the hillbilly drawl of his cruel captors, to the singsong ditty of a scary old man, Woodman treats us to a rich and suspenseful listening experience. The combined talents of Wallace and Woodman give us an audio mystery that will be enjoyed by all. F.L.F. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Orphaned twice and all alone in the world, Taddy watches as Neezer and Lucky, two sinister thieves, steal his family's possessions, and then make him a virtual prisoner. Then a neighbor, Mrs. Mainyard, tells lucky she'd like to hire Taddy during the day as a servant boy. His wages go to Lucky, but he's better fed.
