About the Author:
Laura Lee Benson has been writing about the world around her for as long as she can remember. She grew up in a home filled with pets and wrote stories and poems about nature and the animals that she loved. She earned her B.A. in psychology and is certified in early childhood education.

Laura first became interested in writing for children when she sought to combine her love for children with her love for literature. Her first book, THIS IS OUR EARTH, reflects her concerns about the environment. She is an advocate for environmental issues and believes that it is important for today's children to take an interest in the future of tomorrow's world.

Laura is a member of several environmental and animal welfare organizations. Her interests include writing, reading, and working with children.

She currently lives in Maryland.
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Beginning with "This is our Earth to cherish and love," this picture book of verse set to music (full score appears on the last page) makes nature's majestic beauty accessible to young children. The lilting, simple poem is fleshed out with an informative prose subtext. Below the line, "From the desert sand/Where the tall cactus grow," the text explains that "Deserts are dry-they receive less than ten inches of rain per year. The majority of the world's deserts are not carpets of sand, but are covered with gravel, stones and scattered boulders." The verse/prose combination creates two levels of readership-a combination that will spark ecological interest in youngsters and aid adults in interpreting the pictures. Big, bright watercolors harmonize with the rhythmic flow of the text, making this easily adaptable for use in group settings. A delightful introduction to the environment, this lovely song and book can promote an early sense of responsibility toward the Earth and its inhabitants.
