Jonah-and-Jen. Where does Jonah end and Jen begin? That's what Jonah is asking himself these days. So he decides to put some space between them, and gets himself a new girlfriend: Nicole. Even if she's just a cybergirlfriend, she's a dream come true. But then Nicole turns up in the flesh, and Jonah discovers his dream is turning into a nightmare.
Grade 6 Up?While visiting a virtual chat session, 16-year-old Jonah Lanier meets Nicole Gemini, a beautiful blonde with a tragic past. Immediately, barriers to their relationship begin to fall away, sometimes literally: Jonah's father has a mysterious car accident and cancels a family vacation; Jonah's off-line girlfriend Jen falls within inches of dangerous rocks when a rope swing is cut, then gets committed to a drug-rehabilitation center when pills appear in her purse. It's obvious early in the book that Nicole is somehow responsible for these events, despite the fact that she always has an alibi. The answer (think Gemini) and the fire-and-knife-bestrewn final chapters combine to move the story from cyberthriller into teen gothic. Christopher Pike's and R. L. Stine's fans may enjoy Gemini7, if they're not put off by the computer screen-appearance of its cover, but hard-core techies will be disappointed: Net details aren't central to the story, which revolves around Jonah's relationships with his family, his girlfriend, and the deadly Nicole.?Beth Wright, Edythe Dyer Community Library, Hampden, ME
